NEW YORK POOL + PAVILION - NEW YORK
NEW YORK STATE PAVILION COMPETITION 2016
NATIONAL TRUST FOR HISTORIC PRESERVATION

The design is aimed to preserve the architect- Philip Johnson’s intention as “an unengaged free space”. It’s intended to amplify the existing structure geometry and open space. The static object is activated with several layers of curtain made of fabrics. The curtains move according to the prevailing wind and hence made a dynamic perception from every point of views. The light from the surrounding environment cast shadows on the structure every seconds. The constant dynamism initiates activities in the neighborhood and beyond. It becomes a dynamic object. The main open air structure is used for recreation pool. Facilities such as public bathrooms, public toilets, and restaurant are provided. Pool is applied as a medium to allow interaction between people and the architecture itself. Lines are drawn in order to enhance the existing beautiful geometry. The pool and the void become the core of the building. Its core acts as a place to contemplate its structure and unite with the sky. The artificial lights blurred away the boundary between human and the atmosphere.
